Ep79 How Puerto Rico Helped Win the American Revolution
How did Puerto Rico help shape the birth of the United States?
Most Americans know about George Washington, Lexington, Yorktown, and the Declaration of Independence. But few know that while the ...Continental Army fought in the north, another war was unfolding across the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean.
In this episode of Chronicles & Cocktails, we explore Puerto Rico's forgotten role in the American Revolutionary War through the story of Bernardo de Gálvez, the Spanish campaign against Britain, the strategic importance of San Juan, the Mayagüez Incident, and the multinational effort that helped secure American independence.
We'll also celebrate Independence Day with a patriotic Puerto Rican Piña Colada inspired by the colors of the American flag.
This is a story of Puerto Rico, Spain, and the birth of the United States that deserves to be remembered.

What if I told you that one of the best places to understand Puerto Rico isn't in Puerto Rico at all?
In this episode of Chronicles & Cocktails, we travel to ...Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic—the oldest continuously inhabited European city in the Americas—to explore the centuries-old connection between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
From the historic Calle Las Damas and Fortaleza Ozama to the Cathedral of Santa María la Menor, Plaza de España, the Alcázar de Colón, and the Colonial Zone, we discover how Santo Domingo influenced the history of Puerto Rico and the Spanish Caribbean.
This journey also became deeply personal. While researching Sebastián de Morfi, the founder of Utuado, Puerto Rico, I spent time inside the Historical Archive of the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo with Father José Luis Sáez, whose generosity and dedication to preserving history left a lasting impact on my research. This episode is dedicated to his memory.
Of course, no Chronicles & Cocktails episode would be complete without exploring Dominican food, coffee, rum, and making a classic Santo Libre cocktail.
Join me as we uncover the fascinating history that still connects Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic after more than 500 years.

Morovis is often remembered for a single phrase:
"La Isla Menos Morovis."
But the true story of this mountain town goes far beyond a nickname.
In this episode of Chronicles & Cocktails, we ...explore the historic plaza, the Church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, the cemetery, and one of Puerto Rico's oldest bakeries, Panadería La Patria, founded in 1862.
Along the way, we discover the families who helped build Morovis, including founders Don Juan José de Torres and Don Juan Evangelista Rivera, as well as Bernardino Negrón and many of the early settlers whose descendants remain connected to the town today.
Our journey ends high in the mountains at Casa Bavaria, where an unexpected German-Puerto Rican story reminds us that Puerto Rico's history has always been shaped by people searching for a place to call home.
Join us as we explore history, genealogy, food, culture, and the stories that make Morovis one of Puerto Rico's most fascinating towns.

Ep74 A visit to Hatillo, for the Canary Islands heritage Festival
YOUTUBE DESCRIPTION Most people think Puerto Rico's Spanish ancestry ...
YOUTUBE DESCRIPTION
Most people think Puerto Rico's Spanish ancestry begins with conquistadors, governors, and the colonial elite of Old San Juan.
But what if much of Puerto Rico's true Spanish heritage came ...later?
In this episode of Chronicles & Cocktails, we travel to Hatillo, Puerto Rico, during the Festival de la Herencia Canaria to uncover one of the most important—and often overlooked—influences in Puerto Rican history.
For centuries, thousands of families arrived from the Canary Islands and helped shape Puerto Rico's language, culture, food, traditions, genealogy, and rural identity. From the origins of the Puerto Rican jíbaro to the words we still use today, their legacy remains woven into everyday life across the island.
Along the way, we'll explore:
• Why the Canary Islands became Spain's bridge to the Americas
• The Tributo de Sangre (Blood Tribute) and Canary migration to Puerto Rico
• How Canary settlers helped populate and defend Puerto Rico
• The origins of the Puerto Rican jíbaro
• The influence of Canary Islanders on Puerto Rican Spanish
• Shared words, expressions, and cultural traditions
• Hatillo's unique Canary heritage
• The Festival de las Máscaras and its historical connections
• Traditional foods and customs that survived centuries
• The famous Canary Islands coffee cocktail known as the Barraquito
This is more than a story about migration.
It's a story about people.
Families.
Traditions.
Identity.
And how culture survives across oceans and generations.

Exploring Miramar: Puerto Rico’s Forgotten Spanish Neighborhood In ...
Exploring Miramar: Puerto Rico’s Forgotten Spanish Neighborhood
In this episode of Chronicles & Cocktails, I walk the historic streets of Miramar, San Juan — one of Puerto Rico’s oldest and most ...architecturally important neighborhoods.
Long before luxury towers transformed San Juan’s skyline, Miramar became the island’s first planned residential suburb after 1898. Here, Spanish Revival mansions, Mediterranean villas, neo-Gothic churches, patios, wrought iron balconies, and colorful tiles created a neighborhood that reflected Puerto Rico’s struggle between Spanish heritage, American modernization, and local identity.
But Miramar’s story begins even earlier.
From the British attack of 1797 and the artillery batteries placed on the old “Monte Olimpo,” to the arrival of the electric streetcar, the expansion of the Carretera Central, and the rise of Puerto Rico’s professional and merchant classes, this neighborhood became one of the most fascinating urban landscapes in the Caribbean.
Along the way, we explore:
The British attack on San Juan in 1797
The origins of Miramar and “El Olimpo”
Puerto Rico’s first planned suburb
Spanish Revival and Mediterranean architecture
Historic mansions and hidden streets
Antonín Nechodoma’s neo-Gothic chapel
The transformation of San Juan in the American era
Preservation, gentrification, and the future of historic neighborhoods
A cocktail inspired by Miramar’s Spanish-Caribbean atmosphere
This is not just architecture.
This is Puerto Rico’s identity — built in brick, tile, shadow, and memory.

Does Puerto Rico actually have lakes?
And is the jíbaro outfit many of us grew up seeing ...in schools historically accurate?
In this episode of Chronicles & Cocktails, we dive into seven things many Puerto Ricans grew up believing about Puerto Rico… that deserve a second look.
From the real Puerto Rican pava, to the confusion surrounding jíbaro clothing, the Flor de Maga, reservoirs vs lakes, Puerto Rican identity and DNA, and Puerto Rico’s political status in 1898 — this episode explores the complicated, fascinating, and sometimes misunderstood history behind the island’s symbols and cultural memory.
This is not about attacking Puerto Rico.
It’s about understanding it better.
And yes… the comments section is probably going to be interesting.
